Requirements:
• Specialist in Gastroenterology
• Independent endoscopist with regard to gastro- and colonoscopy
• It is an advantage if one has the speciality in General Internal Medicine, too
• Must be able to handle patients with general internal medicine diseases
• Must be able to participate in on-call work within Internal Medicine in the long term. There are different types of on-call work that may be relevant.
• Social competence and cooperation skills
ABOUT THE WORKPLACE:
Gastroenterological care is provided at all of the three hospitals in the region, where the Central Hospital is responsible for the most specialized care. They have a very extensive reception service with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease and medical liver diseases. The reception service offers the possibility of some endoscopy and several ultrasound machines for abdominal ultrasound and elastography. Inpatient care is available in a ward, where there are 6-8 gastroenterology beds. The hospital has an extensive endoscopy service where gastroenterologists work together with full-time endoscopists.
The gastroenterology section is part of the Department of Medicine, which is responsible for the emergency services for general internal medicine at the Central Hospital.
Salary
The Region applies individual salary setting,
Starting salary for young specialists is 74.200 SEK (directly after specialist training without any experience as a specialist). A specialist with less or more experience earns more. The average salary for specialist doctors in the Region was between around 84-110.000 SEK in 2025, where the latter applied to consultants.

The Central Hospital
It functions both as a county hospital for the entire Region and as a local hospital for the residents of several municipalities.
Central Hospital provides highly specialized care, care that most people need on few occasions in their lives. There are around twenty different specialties, including eyes, skin, gynaecology, kidney medicine, paediatrics, surgery, PCI and oncology. There are approximately 500 beds. The hospital has approximately 3,800 employees, of which approximately 500 are doctors, 1,300 nurses and midwives, 80 physiotherapists, 750 nursing assistants, 750 laboratory staff, 255 care administrators and 350 service employees.

- About 67,200 people visit the emergency department
- They admit about 35,000 patients
- About 360,200 patients visit the hospital’s various departments
- The local ambulance service has about 14,300 ambulance missions and a total mileage of 55,100 kilometres
- They perform about 19,900 (unplanned 4,160, planned 15,760) surgeries
- About 2,700 deliveries take place
- The hospital kitchen prepares 949,000 meals
Everything takes place on an area of premises of about 208,900 square meters, which is equivalent to about 26 football fields.
